The Poniente Almeriense is a Spanish region located in the southwestern part of the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. This territory borders the Almería regions of Alpujarra to the north and Metropolitan Almería to the northeast, as well as the Granada regions of Costa to the southwest and Alpujarra Granadina to the west. It has access to the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east, the Sierra de Gádor mountain range to the north, and the city of Almería and the Gulf of Almería to the northeast.
It comprises ten municipalities, the most populated being Roquetas de Mar, and the largest El Ejido; conversely, the least populated municipality is Enix, and the smallest in area is La Mojonera. Its traditional and historical capital is the city of El Ejido.
Like the other regions of Almería, it is only recognized geographically, not politically.
Geography
In the Poniente Almeriense region, four relief units can be distinguished: the Sierra de Gádor, a mountain range in the north of the region, located in Berja, Dalías, Enix, Felix, and the northern half of Vícar; the Sierra de Adra, a small mountain range in the west of Poniente Almeriense, located northwest of Adra; the Campo de Dalías, a plain that extends across most of the region,[5] located in El Ejido, La Mojonera, Roquetas de Mar, and the southern half of Vícar; and the Hoya de Adra, a depression dominated by the Adra River, located within the municipality of Adra.

Hydrography
The Poniente Almeriense region is characterized by its aridity, where the most prevalent hydrographic features are the ramblas (dry riverbeds). However, its subsoil is populated by numerous aquifers, used to extract water for the region and the rest of the province of Almería.
Protected Natural Areas
Among its natural areas, the Adra lagoon and the Entinas-Sabinar point stand out as nature reserves and natural sites.[7][8] There are also other protected areas, such as the Castala Peri-urban Park, the Peñón de Bernal Natural Monument, and the Artos de El Ejido, as relict ecosystems in danger of extinction.
Municipalities
The region is made up of the following municipalities: Adra, Balanegra, Berja, El Ejido, Enix, Felix, La Mojonera, Roquetas de Mar, and Vícar.
