Like the other regions of Almería, it is only recognized geographically and culturally, but not politically. As its name suggests, it is located in the Almería part of the historical territory of La Alpujarra, north of the Sierra de Gádor and south of the Sierra Nevada, in the upper and middle reaches of the Andarax River.
