The numerous Islamic castles and fortresses that dot the region's landscape testify to the important role this place played in the development of this district of Almería. However, they were not the first settlers of the towns of Filabres-Sierra Alhamilla-Río Nacimiento. Thus, in towns like Fiñana, with a very rich heritage, tombs and remains of settlements can be found that demonstrate the existence of a complete population chain dating back to the Neolithic period.

The district also boasts some fine examples from Roman times. Good strategists used towns like Fiñana to control troop traffic to neighboring Granada. It was also this civilization that established Tabernas as a supply center for the Roman troops. The name actually comes from the Latin word tabernae, meaning "shop." But it was undoubtedly the Arabs who brought this area to its peak. The population decline began, especially after the Moors were expelled. The fortress in Fiñana, captured by Abd al-Rahman III in 913, remains of this settlement. Demographic decline was constant, a situation that has been improved in modern times thanks to the region's economic powerhouse, activities such as mining, viticulture, and olives, along with almonds, and later, tourism.
