Tabernas Castle |
Prehistoric settlement of Terrera Ventura near Tabernas |
In the chameleon-like desert of cacti and eroded, dusty hills lies Tabernas, a unique place dominated by the ruins of its Moorish castle. A
crossroads of different civilizations, it became a supply post for troops in Roman times. Its name comes from the Latin tabernae, meaning shop.
Tabernas's rich archaeological and cultural heritage is impressive. Here you can find everything from prehistoric sites to the Neolithic agricultural
and pastoral settlement of Terrera Ventura. The Nazari Castle, which stands at the highest point above the town, was built to defend against sieges
by Berber pirates and was the scene of a meeting between El Zagal and the Catholic Monarchs. Even Isabella the Catholic herself stayed here.
The special climate and landscape made it a suitable location for the nearby establishment of Almería's Solar Energy Center. It is the largest
facility of its kind in Europe and benefits from the 3,000 hours of sunshine a year that prevail in the province. Visitors wishing to observe the
research being conducted here must register.

Motorcycle racetrack near Tabernas |
One of the western villages |
From nature lovers, we can move on to lovers of large-displacement motorcycles, as near Tabernas is the race track of the same name, which has hosted
several races counting towards the Andalusian Championship. It is often visited by motorcyclists from all over the country and abroad, who,
especially in winter, are looking for a warm place to rent tracks and do a few laps.
A good route through Tabernas must not, however, neglect the so-called western villages, built during the great boom that occurred in this region in
the 1950s and 1960s, when it became a film set and a source of income for the locals. Iconic films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and
Lawrence of Arabia were filmed here. The Midsummer Night's Eve bonfire, a typical festival in the region, allows visitors to witness one of
the most impressive spectacles for the eyes and, at the same time, enjoy the typical gastronomy.
