The uniqueness of this area opened the door to major superproductions. Soon, the tourist resorts of Mojácar and Níjar were chosen for biblical films such as The Kiss of Judas. Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, one of the most expensive films of its time, costing over $20 million, were also filmed in Carboneras.

In the Algarrobico area, a faithful replica of the Jordanian city of Aqaba was built. A few years later, the residents of Algarrobico were surely very surprised to see John Lennon of the Beatles strolling through their village while starring in the film How I Won the War.
